The Front 9

The longer front nine is a mix of woodland and links-style holes which tests golfers from the start with two par-5's and the demanding par-4, 3rd hole. The par-5 1st hole can be reached in two, but the approach shot must carry a pond fronting the green. After a routine par-3, 4th, the course stretches out again the rest of the way. Only the short, par-4, 7th hold offers a potential birdie. Making pars on the front nine amounts to keeping the ball in the fairway. Signature holes are the par-4, 5th (dogleg left) and the par-3, 190-yard 9th - where everything rolls right, toward a large pond.

1st Hole
Get out the driver for this tree-lined par 5, where a well-placed tee shot will face slightly to the right and stay away from early water on the left. In the final 75 yards, prefer the right half of the fairway to avoid a pond that protects the sloping green.

2nd Hole
A rolling par 5 sheltered by evergreens along the right side. Beware the left-side water hazard cutting half-way across the fairway 150 yards out from the pin. Any approach that's short of the green would best stick to lower ground to the right.

3rd Hole
The number 1 handicap hole at Riverview, this deceptive par 4 pounces on errant shots. From the tee, medium-length hitters should drive into the left-centre fairway and elude the ball-hungry pond 170 yards out. More treacherous water reaches up to front right apron of the green, a wet finale for many off-line approaches.

4th Hole
If you're going to miss the large green on this par 3, do so to th eleft. Sand traps guard the front right of the green, and anything further right will be battling trees and water.

5th Hole
Accuracy is rewarded on this full-length par 4, where serious tree cover greets stray tee shots on either side of the dog-leg fairway. It doesn't get any easier at the finish, where the narrow, angled green is bounded by sand at the front, water to the left and a big conifer standing sentry to the right.

6th Hole
This rambling par 5 is a treat for straight long-ball players, but its mature trees and water will tax hooks and slices. Keep it in play and don't fly the flat, round green, or you may find the pond lurking 15 yards beyond.

7th Hole
To score on this par 4, keep your tee shot on the rolling fairway. Otherwise the screen of trees to the left makes it difficult to hit the green in regulation. And on the right, water hazards await errant dries and approach shots. Beware the forest which is snug behin the green.

8th Hole
Off the tee, accuracy is as crucial as distance on this challenging par 4. Stray from the narrowing, tree-lined fairway and you can quickly lose sight of a green which is guarded by sand to the left, trees to the right and a solitary maple 40 yards in front.

9th Hole
The big pond protecting the right half of this par 3 has many victims. If you're not confident of reaching the green in flight, make sure tee shots find the patch of fairway at the left front. Balls hit there will often run onto the green toward the pin.
